I?d heard many things, even from brokers. Here?s the note I got from
Mike Stemm, general manager of Dominion Trading Company, lately
mentioned on this NG:

?We just returned from Ethiopia. The people in Yirgacheffe pronounce
it ?Yir ga tchef A?. The emphasis is on the 3rd syllable.?

I asked one of the Ethiopians the same question at their SCAA booth
last year. He pronounced it several times, and I repeated after him. I
would only add that the first syllable is pronounced "year," but with
a slight roll of the "r," and the second syllable is a long "a." So it
came out like "Year-r-r-gah-CHEFF-ay."

I walked away with a small bag of the stuff, which I treasured, being
a lover of Yirgacheffe and assuming the Ethiopians would bring their
best greens to the convention. I saved it for a couple of months and
brought it to the SCAA Homecoming last summer. I handed it to a pro
who put it through a sample roaster, but not before informing me the
beans were old and substandard. Kind of took the pleasure out of it.
And, yes, the coffee didn't have much to recommend it.

그는 몇 번 반복해서 발음해 주고,저는 따라했는데 말이죠.

말씀드리자면 뭐, 첫번째 음절은 '이어-ㄹ' , 그런데 ㄹ 발음은 좀 굴립니다.

그리고 두번째 음절은 'ㅏ' 인데 좀 깁니다.

그러니 발음은 '이어-ㄹ-ㄹ-가-쳎-아이' 가 되네요.

저는 Yirgacheffe 의 애용자로서 (그때) 거의 작은 가방 하나에 들어찰 만큼 (커피를) 얻어서는 고이고이 간직했었는데요.

(당시) 그 에티오피아 사람은 그 총회 때 가장 좋은 생두를 갖고 나왔을 거라 생각했답니다.

그걸 몇 달간 보관해 두었다가 지난 여름 SCAA Homecoming 때 갖고 나와서는한 전문 배전업자에게 건네주었죠.

그는 샘플 로스트를 했는데요, 그제서야 이 콩들이 오래되었고 품질이 안 좋은 거란 걸 그 사람이 말해 줘서 알았습니다. 기분 황이었습니다.

뭐, 추천할 만한 것은 못 되었죠.

There are 88 different languages spoken in Ethiopia, and that's not
including dialects. You could ask 88 Ethiopians and get 88 different
answers. The one I posted above from my SIL is the Amharic pronunciation.
Amharic is the primary legal language (the language of the hereditary
ruling class) of Ethiopia.

--> 에티오피아에는 언어가 무려 88가지나 있고, 그 88가지란 것도 사투리는 포함하지 않은 것이랍니다.

그러니 (서로 다른 언어를 쓰는) 에티오피아인 88명에게 물어봐도 모두 다르게 대답하겠지요.

예전에 올린 글이 있는데, 암하릭어 발음이었습니다.

암하릭어는에티오피아의 법적인 제 1 국어(그 나라 대대로 집권 계층의 언어)이지요.

Ityop'iya or, if you want to be formal, Ityop'iya Federalawi
Demokrasiyawi Ripeblik. At least in Amharic, which is the official
governmental language. Amharic has about 100 letters, so exact
transliteration is tricky.

발음은 비슷하더만 'ㅣ' 자는 거의 소리가 안 나더군요.

그래서 'ㅣ' 자 조금 넣어서 'ㅣ+우르가체페' 같이 들리더군요.
